HGTV Has Some Problems
I love HGTV. It can always be depended upon to provide fun entertainment, when flipping through the other useless channels.
I have a few issues that must be aired.
First, when casting your shows, it would be a good idea to find "clients", those folks appearing on television to have their rooms redone, or their closets reorganized, that actually have a bit of personality. It's bad enough that some of your hosts have no charisma (I believe I could do one of these hosting jobs with my eyes closed), but it is even more painful to add loser homeowners. I am sitting here watching Designing for the Sexes. The couple on today's episode, (to quote Julie Brown's Medusa) have the personality of Spam. They are boring, uptight and I cannot imagine the somber lives these people must lead. I certainly don't live a life of adventure, but I sure as hell don't take "it" all so seriously. Lighten up.
Next, I am just plain tired of having Suzanne Wang of House Hunters announce at the end of each episode that the couple of that week's program are now expecting. It has become a joke between the other half and I. Will she provide this tidbit of info, or will she not? 95 % of the time, there is that footnote about a new baby. Give me a break. I don't care.
Also, on House Hunters (generally) we get an unnerving confirmation that these "clients" not only have no personality, but also no vision, taste or common sense. As they walk through various properties, they comment on their dislike of a paint color, or a light fixture. In many cases, those are their only concerns on making a possible offer on the property. For Godsake, these things can be changed. In other areas, people don't like how it is decorated, or how the furniture is placed. It can be changed and probably will be changed (when the current owner moves their shit out!) VISION! Some of the homes they show are so hideous, and what makes it worse, is that many of the prospective buyers are excited about the absolutely horrendous fixtures or design aspects within the home. I expect people to have certain things they require/want within a possible home, but have a little vision, a little common sense and take some courses in good taste. Oh, and get some better social skills. It's painful to watch you live your life.
Finally, there is Robin Turner. She is the chick that hosts the short segments about Lowe's and Biltmore Estate (America's Largest Home). She asks groundskeepers and other employees of this historic estate about their various tips and tricks to keep this property up and running. She has to be one of the worst people ever to hold this type of position. She cannot deliver lines with any semblance of conviction or excitement. She bleeds falseness when she speaks, and it is infuriating to hear her "thank" her guest. She truly sucks! Fire this woman, please! Give me the job, give anyone else the job. But Robin, I am sorry. Your time is up.
On any given design show, it has become quite an event for the other half and I to see a person with personality, wit, energy and common sense. They are super rare. But they are out there. Just keep watching. Eventually, they will come.
