"Kitchen Stories"

Let's just say that you should sprint, not run, not jog, not walk to go rent/buy this movie. Forsake all other choices on your current Netflix list. Do what you can to see this movie. The other half and I first heard of this on NPR a few years back. It sounded interesting, so when we saw it for sale, we picked it up. I knew very little about this, and we did not put it in the top spot for immediate viewing. We have had it for about a year already. It was a fluke that I chose it. The other half wanted something "light and whimsical". It was both of these things, but much more. Much deeper, much more moving and much more amazing than your average run-of-the-mill "light and whimsical" film. It is in Swedish (I believe) and with English subtitles. The set up is simple. The Swedes are studying the kitchen habits of several single male Norwegians, in post WWII Norway. Of course the scientists are not to interact with their subjects, but we all know that humans cannot do that. We get involved, there's no helping it. I will say little more, cuz I certainly enjoyed the fact that I was not looking for anything and knew nothing of what would transpire. Let me just say that is has the most special relationship between two men, that I have ever seen in any film. Is this overstating it? I sincerely doubt it. I was moved to sobs and tears, and had to stifle them for a long time after the film's completion. Very little dialogue, just pure love and the intense need for human contact that we all have experienced. These characters got to be a part of it, and so did I. And I am extremely grateful for this journey. Super highly recommended.
