Great Performances #3

Cherry Jones in Signs. She has very little screen time, but was one of the things most memorable about this; one of my favorite films. There are several snippets of the climactic revelation by the Mel Gibson character's wife. When it's finally all out in the open, and the sheriff has to carefully explain to Graham (Gibson) what has happened to his wife, it's a completely heartbreaking moment. Cherry is able to show the pain of what she is about to tell and how hard it is to remain calm and professional. The audience is already aware that she knows this family well, and obviously has a deeper connection than sheriff to citizen. Watch this scene and you'll understand how much she's holding back. It's hard to watch, but at the same time fascinating cuz it's such a tremendous performance.
