I just loved being Julia. But the hats were a little tight...
As the Oscars approach, we have seen only The Aviator. So our plan is to go see all of the films that have the multiple nominations, to cover as much territory as possible. You know, Sideways, Finding Neverland, Million Dollar Baby. Well, our timing was a bit off when we arrived @ the theatre yesterday, so Being Julia became the final choice. I wanted to see it anyway, but with only a week til the red carpet, I need to see the other films listed. After all, Being Julia only has one nomination (I think). Well, thankfully it was not a letdown. Annette Bening was amazing, and the film itself was equally as good. It took some time for me to love it. It was definitely enjoyable from the start, but it was the final scene in the theatre that clinched the deal. Wow! Bening was flawless. Michael Gambon's ghostly director was a welcome treat, and not overused. Shaun Evans as Julia's hot, young lover was also quite believable as the giant ass his character turned out to be. I was expecting another Sunset Boulevard, but instead, I got something much lighter, but equally as moving. Both Julia Lambert(Bening) and Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) were battling their own mortality, sagging breasts and sagging careers, but Julia triumphs in the end. While Norma will spend her remaining days in prison, Julia has just reached her stride, and will excel from here on out.
