This Holiest of Days
It's a holiday for horror film fanatics. I am one of those obsessive fans. My plan was to come home from work; make some chili and watch 2-3 of my favorite Friday the 13th forays. Well, I came home; and the other half didn't want to go to the store for supplies (it is freezing outside; after all), so we ordered takeout. Fine. Strike one. Then, as I was flipping channels; I realized that Battlestar Galactica was on tonight. Strike two. To boot, it wasn't the best of episodes. Ugh. So, @ 7pm, we watched the first hour of the original Friday the 13th on Bravo (complete w/ Kevin Bacon's junk stuffed nicely into a speedo); and then tuned in for Battlestar Galactica @ 8pm. So, my big piece of the celebratory pie; was watching Friday the 13th Part 2; just before bedtime. I have several favorites in the franchise, so my original plan of watching most of those favorites, was left undone. I guess then, that my choice of Part 2 confirms that it is my favorite Jason film. Amy Steele is a spunky heroine; and John Furey is a nice hunk to admire throughout the film; even if he doesn't appear shirtless. Some of the better moments? Jason running across the road in front of the police officer. The under-the-bed peeing scene. The final moments in Jason's "home". The "there's someone in this fucking room" bit. The old "head in the refrigerator gag". This has one of the best chase scenes in the series; and I think that is due to Amy Steele's hard sell. She's believable; and was given the opportunity to play a stalker film heroine w/ a few smarts. Ginny is a child psychology major, no less. Perfect in battling a "frightened retard" such as Jason. Also, you have to love the wheelchair killing. Sweet. My hope is that every Friday the 13th that comes my way; will allow me to enjoy these favorites; cuz they'll certainly never get any face time at other moments throughout the year. The other half wouldn't have it. Happy birthday/anniversary dear Jason; and a shout out to your lovely mother. Happy Friday the 13th!
