Movie Mania
Seen a few things in the past week.
The Simpsons Movie. I really enjoyed it; and there were several laugh-out-loud moments. In essence, I think it was a really good episode. My understanding is that they were going for that familiarity. It was nothing outstanding. I wouldn't go for "amazing", but I would also refrain from giving it a "meh". Seeing Bart's genitals had to be the highlight; if a bizarre one at that. Middle ground.
Children of Men. I've never really gotten Clive Owen, but now I do get the hype. All of the performances were stellar. The story was heartbreaking. I've been thinking about this one for days. So uplifting and yet so dark and horrifying. I highly recommend this film to one and all. Keep an eye out for the amazing long-lasting camera-bloodied shot toward the end of the film; awesome. The best word for this film? Hypnotic. Oh, and special mention should be given to "Jasper"; Michael Caine's character. Just brilliant.
Tombs of the Blind Dead. David brought this over for viewing following French Toast. It's a howler! Some of the most ridiculous situations/characters/dialogue paired with some very terrifying visuals. The location used in the film was full of dread; and the many shots of the Templars were actually very disturbing. And of course the great lesbian love scene. Good stuff. Check this one out. I suppose I'll have to see the numerous sequels. Perhaps, so should you.
Masters of Horror: Sick Girl: This is the first of this series that I've seen. I know, I know. What kind of horror film fan am I? We've got Coscarelli, Carpenter, Gordon; and so many others. Where have I been? Well, this was a great first foray into this series. Lucky McKee directed this one. This is also the first film of his that I have seen. I actually met Angela Bettis a few years back @ Flashback Weekend. I didn't know her work then; but I wish I had. She was wonderful in Sick Girl. I definitely will check out her other work; as well as McKee's...which shouldn't be hard; as I think they've done most of their major work together. Bugs, quirky lesbians (a theme last night; except for my film), and nasty mutations. Loved this. I think I've found a new fave in Angela Bettis. Must, must, must check out her other stuff.
