Like the Cylons...I Too Have a Plan
Happy Thanksgiving...Happy Turkey Day to one and all. I kind of miss blogging fifty times a day, but the day job prevents me from keeping up as I once did. I come home after a workday, ready for food, some DVR programming and then precious sleep, leaving me little time to blog it all out into the open. It usually has to wait until I have a day off. Today's that day. It's early in the morning, the other half is still asleep in our cozy little studio apartment, and we don't have to be anywhere for several more hours.
I was thrilled to have the work day completed. I'm even more excited for today's events. Friends, food and relaxation. Let the passing of gas commence.
A few updates...for my avid readers of 1.
Work has been fine. Still not loving it, but I don't think that ever becomes possible. Monday will be my 2 month anniversary. Is anniversary the right word? Doesn't that imply that there's something to celebrate? Hmm. Well, I guess a steady job is not something to take lightly. Not that our economy isn't in stellar condition. Ahem.
I am itching and twitching and hoping and praying that Hillary becomes Secretary of State. I know this has been on the news for well over a week, and I haven't even mentioned it. My fingers are super-duper crossed right now. C'mon Barack...make the final offer, and dammit Hill, you'd better accept!
Madonna's Sticky & Sweet tour was here @ the beginning of the month. She even had Justin Timberlak and Britney Spears onstage when she was at Dodger Stadium. Bummer. Due to lack of funds, we didn't get to go. I wasn't ultra saddened, but it would have been a nice treat to see my lady; and her special guests.
A few movies of the past weeks.
1) Flamingo Road. It's a late 40's Joan Crawford piece. It's high soap opera drama, but Joan is her usual stunning, immensely entertaining self. She's a retired carnival girl in a small town, looking for love in all the wrong places, and working in a diner in the meantime. The town sheriff; a stellar, bloated performance by Sydney Greenstreet (you'll never crave a glass of milk again), is on her back from day one, attempting to keep her from moving up in the town's social circles (to the coveted Flamingo Road neighborhood); particularly becoming attached to the sheriff's political golden boy. The film's nothing spectacular, but it was a good time. Deserving high praise, is the dialogue. One doozy was Joan being told, "You sure ask a lot of questions." Joan's reply, "Someone once told me that was a good way to get answers." Classic.
2) Roller Boogie. Filmed in nearby Venice, this was a howler of epic proportions. Linda Blair is the headliner, and she clearly does a great deal of her own skate work. Good for her. It's about a bunch of skaters living the skating life, and working toward a better skater's life; in the form of Olympic hopes and the big dance-off @ Jammers Skating Rink. But, there are real estate developers wanting to tear down Jammers place; and they'll stop at nothing. The kids won't have it. There's a few bits of story in between the many skate/dance scenes, but overall, there's not much here. In my heyday of crap-tastic 80's flicks, I would have loved this, and it would no doubt have been one of my all time faves. As is, it was a cheesy treat, but will never fill my heart like so many of my other all time "bad" movie faves. Kimberly Beck (best known to me as "Trish" in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter) shows up as Linda's best friend. The track accompanying the opening credits is sung by Cher of all people. This basically seemed like a low budget version of Xanadu. Which one came first? BTW, I don't know why I love Linda Blair so much. There are moments of good acting from her, but then there are those common not-so-great moments. Something about her I've always loved, no matter what it is. Same case here.
3) Madagascar. We've had this on DVR for months, and since we saw a preview of the sequel in the works way back in July, we decided to finally take a gander. Nothing much to say. It's a great time, and the penguins are obviously my favorite.
So you want to know about Simon Baker? Not much has happened, thus I've still not made one of the many deadlines I've set for myself. Interestingly, he was on The View on Monday. It was the first time I've seen an interview with him. Will it give me some insight into how to write for his "character"? C'mon...we all know I'm not that smart. The writing continues.
Over the weekend, the other half reconnected w/ an old friend/flame from his time in LA about 20 years ago. I met up w/ them for dinner on Saturday, and then played hooky from work on Sunday. Yeah, I know. I can't afford to be doing such juvenile things, but I really didn't feel well that day. After some relaxing, new friend Chris, the other half and I took a mini-road trip to Santa Barbara & Montecito. We had a nice meal @ a place called Lucky's, and then had a not-so-cheap warm drink and dessert @ The Biltmore Four Seasons in Santa Barbara. Afterward, we all took a walk on the beach. It was a very nice escape, and actually our first time outside of the LA area (sort of) since we got here back in May. Lordy. Chris is a fun guy, and I'm sure we'll be hanging w/ him much more in the future.
Old friends for me this week as well. Way back in the day; when I was still living in Minneapolis...about 10 years ago...jeez, I met a woman on the street. Not that she was a streetwalker, or a bum...not at all. I was at Tony & Tina's Wedding w/ friends Margaret and Robb. As we left the theatre, we met a woman named Cindy. Cindy and I became close. It was a very strange; instant connection. I even had doubts about my sexuality...not deep doubts, but I was so intrigued by her and by the quick, deep connection, that I thought I was "interested" in her. It didn't turn out to be that, of course, but it was still a fun new friendship. She was a budding musician when we met and apparently has kept going. I need to take some time to listen to her tracks on MySpace. When I moved to Chicago, we somehow lost touch. She recently found me on MySpace. It was a real treat to reconnect w/ her, and I look forward to finding that tie that binds. Hey there, Cindy Lou. Weird, huh?
Well, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is on the tellie, and we need to sort of start dragging our sorry asses around the house, preparing ourselves to move into polite society for the day.
Oh, btw, do you want to know what the plan is? I came up w/ it the other day. It's in the future, but I believe it would be a grand old time. It involves a housewarming party (when we move into our fabulous new condo--hey, it could happen) and making my dreams come true. I'm a dork.
I'm thankful for all of my friends. How's that for a closer?
And now, to end w/ a Thanksgiving movie quote...
"I'll bring the crescent rolls. You know I can't cook."
& later...
"Welcome to Marathon, may I help you?"
"Yes."
"How may I help you?"
& later...
"Oh boy."
"Oh boy, what?"
"You're fucked."
Happy Thanksgiving!

Ahh... The luxury of watching grown-up movies at one's leisure. And the luxury of not having Madagascar memorized. Lovely. ;)
Hope you both are having a nice holiday season.
