Running...with Lola this time
For years, friends have told me about Run Lola Run. I knew the scenario and it did sound interesting. So why did it take so long to view? How the hell should I know? I don't run my own life. Run? Get it? We found it for sale yesterday, so we picked it up. Pounding story, soundtrack and tension. We watched it right after The Manchurian Candidate, so we were already on that heightened level of sensory overload. So let's take it one step further, and produce a heart attack! I thought Manni was adorable, and had the fullest lips of any human being on earth. You know what those are good for. But, I digress. I loved the concept, and the consistency in each tale was impressive. It wasn't until the final chapter, that I realized the white car, that kept getting hit by the bloke in the garage-leaving car, was the big boss of Manni. Duh! Well, there was a lot going on, so I guess I can forgive myself that tiniest of brain farts. Hard to pinpoint exact favorite moments, cuz you did not have a lot of time to take it in, before the next sprint to the finish line began. Ok, well, here's one. Lola's scream in the casino, and the amazed look on the patron's faces as she cashed in her winnings. Perfect. Oh, yes, the revelation that the ambulance was carrying the bank security guard. Touching, and you know what, I did recall him touching his chest in one of the earlier tellings. I did catch that small detail, so that makes up for missing the boss's car. Right? Everyone mentions the soundtrack. Yes, it was brilliant, and was the cornerstone of the film. Can you imagine a Jerry Goldsmith (God rest his soul) score on this? No. What was most fun about this film, was the attention to detail. How loud did I scream when Lola first ran into the bum w/ the bag? Or how much did I yell when Manni started his approach to the grocery store? How much did I laugh @ the everlasting moments of the bank clerk going downstairs for the additional cash, and then putting the overage in his own bin? How much did I sizzle @ the sight of Manni in bed, naked? How hard would I run, if I knew he was to be @ the end of race? Oops, there I go again! Masterfully done, and one of those films that you can really never see again for the first time. Once in a lifetime experience. I would love to do a film like this, if for nothing more than the great exercise.
